Menus and shortcuts

Find every application command

Exempla uses the same menu hierarchy on macOS and Windows. The commands and their enabled states are shared, while their placement follows each operating system.

macOS

The Exempla, File, Edit, View, Window, and Help menus appear in the system menu bar at the top of the screen.

Windows

The same six menus appear in a compact strip inside the application window, immediately below the title bar.

About Exempla

Shows application identity and version information.

Update available · version

Appears only when a newer version is known. Selecting it opens the release or download page.

Check for Updates…

Runs a manual online check. It is greyed out while Automatically Check for Updates is selected.

Automatically Check for Updates

When selected, Exempla checks after launch only if at least one day has passed since the last check. It performs no checks while the application is closed.

Appearance…

Choose Classic, Aurora, or Clarity (High Contrast), select Light or Dark, and choose the Exempla or a custom accent where available.

Quit Exempla

Closes the application. Save first if the project contains changes you want to keep.

When an update is available, the K button also shows an animated edge sparkle and an Update available label. Use its close control to choose Remind me later or Skip this version. Remind me later hides the notice for one day. Skip this version hides that release until a newer version is found.

Create, open, import, and save

New Project

Starts a new project after Exempla handles any unsaved changes in the open project.

Open Project…

Opens a saved Exempla project.

Open Recent

Lists recently opened projects. Choose Clear Recent Projects to remove the list, not the project files.

Add Text Files…

Imports UTF-8 TXT or DOCX files. See Preparing Your Files.

Save

Saves the current project to its existing location.

Save As…

Saves the project under a new name or in another location.

Edit the control you are currently using

Undo, Redo, Cut, Copy, Paste, and Select All follow the field, editor, list, or table that currently has keyboard focus. The menu refreshes when opened, so commands that do not apply are disabled.

Move through the application

The View menu opens Concordance, Word List, Sequences, Statistics, Transcript, Import, or Clipboard. A checkmark identifies the current workspace. It also contains Enter Full Screen or Exit Full Screen.

The Window menu contains Minimize and Center Window. On Windows, it also provides Maximize or Restore. On macOS, standard window behaviour is also available from the traffic-light controls.
